Treating association with an elite or admired group as evidence of quality.

## Origin and naming

The bandwagon's smaller, better-dressed cousin: not 'everyone' believes it, but the right people do. Advertisers have run it for a century — sell the association, not the product — and economists describe the matching 'snob effect', where demand among elites rises precisely because the masses do not have it.

## More places it shows up

- A consulting deck recommends a workflow because 'the best companies run it', skipping whether a twelve-person firm has their problems.
- An interviewer asks a chef which pan 'professionals use', and the answer is treated as a verdict on what home cooks should own.
- A neighbourhood's cafe raises its prices to be taken seriously, and regulars' praise of the 'real' taste tracks the receipt exactly.
- A graduate joins a club she cannot afford because its name opens doors, then defends the fee as an investment in her seriousness.

## How to spot it

- Notice when the evidence offered is a guest list: names of who uses it, not measurements of what it does.
- Watch for the phrase 'serious people' or its local equivalent — content-free praise that exists only to shame doubters outside.
- Check who benefits from your imitation; if the answer is the seller, the pedigree was the product.
